The History of Monopoly at McDonald’s
Monopoly started at McDonald’s in 1987. It was based on the classic board game by Hasbro. Back then, it was all about peeling stickers from food wrappers and sticking them on a game board. People loved it because it mixed fun with eating out. Families would go to McDonald’s just to get more pieces.

The Big Scandal Behind the Game
Not everything was fun with Monopoly. A huge scam happened starting in 1989. It lasted until 2001 when the FBI caught on. Someone tipped them off that big winners were related. After checking, they arrested eight people for cheating at the game. The main person was Jerome Jacobson, called Uncle Jerry. He worked in security for the company that made the game pieces for McDonald’s. That company was Simon Marketing. Jacobson stole the high-value pieces, like the ones for a million dollars. He sold them to people for cash, sometimes fifty thousand dollars each.

The cheaters would then turn in the pieces and win the prizes. They took more than twenty million dollars from McDonald’s. It was like a real-life crime story. Jacobson faced charges for mail fraud and more. The story even became a documentary on HBO in 2020. This scandal shocked everyone. McDonald’s had to fix how it ran promotions to stop cheats. It showed that even fun games can have dark sides if not watched closely.
How the Scandal Changed Things
After the scam, McDonald’s made sure future games were fair. They changed companies and added more checks. The game paused for a bit, but came back stronger. People still trusted it because McDonald’s handled it well. The brand’s quick action helped rebuild confidence. Over time, the Monopoly game became just as popular, showing its lasting appeal.

McDonald’s Sales Turnaround
McDonald’s sales are improving after a slow start. They blame high prices and less spending for the early drop. But smart moves helped. The Minecraft movie tie-in brought in kids and families. New chicken strips appealed to those wanting variety.

The Role of Loyalty Programs
Loyalty programs are key for McDonald’s now. Under their CEO, Chris Kempczinski, they focus on this. Members visit twice as often after joining. Discounts pull them in. About a quarter of US business comes from loyalty members. They score high on value and affordability. The program gives data on what people order. This helps McDonald’s tailor deals.

Prizes and What You Can Win
Let’s talk more about prizes. Small ones are easy, like free fries or a drink. Collect a set like the railroads, and you get something quick. Medium prizes might be gift cards or more points. Points let you get free food later. Big prizes are rare but exciting. The million airline miles mean free trips. A new Jeep is a dream for many. The one million cash is the top.
