Early Struggles Set the Stage
The game started poorly for the Mets, with starting pitcher David Peterson struggling. He gave up five runs on five hits in just one and one-third innings. His earned run average climbed to 4.22, the first time it’s been over 4.00 this season. Peterson has started all 30 of his games, but this was a rough outing. The Cubs jumped ahead 6-1 early.

The Rally That Changed the Game
The Mets didn’t give up despite being down by five runs. They started their comeback in the middle innings, scoring runs bit by bit. This was a big deal because they hadn’t won a game trailing by five or more runs since May 19, 2023. That was 80 straight losses in those situations. The team’s patience at the plate paid off. Hitters got on base with singles, doubles, and walks. They wore down the Cubs’ pitchers by waiting for good pitches. The dugout got louder with each run scored. This momentum shift showed the Mets’ playoff-style fight. They tied the game before the big moment came.

Multiple relievers worked together to keep the Cubs from scoring more. This effort was key to the comeback. The bullpen showed the team’s depth and reliability. Closer Edwin Diaz sealed the win with a two-inning save, his third this season. He struck out five batters, retiring all six he faced, using only 27 pitches.
