Season 3 of the show, which explores the unsettling Ed Gein case, is scheduled to premiere. According to sources, Monster Season 4 is already in the early stages of creation, and it may center on one of America's most infamous historical cases: the Lizzie Borden axe murders, even as work on that installment continues.
One of the most contentious mysteries in true-crime history is Lizzie Borden's purported murder of her father and stepmother in 1892, which makes it an appropriate topic for Monster's trademark fusion of historical analysis and psychological drama.

If verified, this would be a further extension of the anthology's focus, going beyond murderers from the 20th century to examine more ancient but no less eerie criminal cases. As interest in Monster Season 4 grows, questions rise about the show, including its possible subject and production schedule, casting rumors, and the real-life background that might influence its plot.

Lizzie Borden lived in Fall River, Massachusetts, and became a household name in American criminal history after being accused of a brutal double homicide. In 1892, her father, Andrew Borden, and her stepmother, Abby Borden, were found murdered in their home, having suffered multiple blows to the head with a hatchet. The shocking nature of the crime, coupled with the social standing of the Borden family, catapulted the case into the national spotlight.
The circumstantial evidence and widespread public suspicion, but Lizzie Borden was acquitted in a highly publicized trial the following year. No other suspects were ever charged, and the case has remained unsolved to this day. The enduring mystery surrounding the murders, combined with public fascination and folklore, has kept Borden’s story alive in books, films, and now, potentially, another on-screen portrayal through Ryan Murphy’s acclaimed series.

Following reports of suspicious activity, including the burning of clothing she said was tainted with paint, authorities took her into custody. Lizzie never testified during her 1893 trial, and it is said that she passed out when the skulls of her parents were displayed. She was ultimately exonerated of the allegations after the jury determined that the evidence was insufficient.
Lizzie's social standing never improved, but she and her sister Emma remained to reside in Fall River after the trial and inherited their father's estate. Her narrative has been the subject of several theatrical retellings, films, musicals, books, and nursery rhymes over the years.

Notable examples include the 2014 film Lizzie Borden Took an Ax, in which Christina Ricci plays the title character, and the 1975 television drama The Legend of Lizzie Borden, which starred Elizabeth Montgomery. The Lizzie Borden Chronicles (2015), a limited series that recreated Lizzie's life following the trial, featured Ricci reprising the role.
By examining a potential romantic relationship between Lizzie and Bridget Sullivan, the Borden family's live-in maid, the 2018 movie Lizzie offered a fresh perspective. Kristen Stewart played Bridget in the film, and Chloë Sevigny played Lizzie. Despite being speculative, this view shows continued interest in the case's emotional and psychological intricacies. The Lizzie Borden case is one of the more ambiguous and open-ended entries in the Monster series, with a lot of layers to the narrative and plenty of opportunity for imaginative interpretation.

Ed Gein, a murderer whose horrific 1950s actions served as the inspiration for well-known fictional characters like Norman Bates in Psycho and Leatherface in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, will be the subject of the next season. Gein will be portrayed by Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam. Olivia Williams, Laurie Metcalf, and Tom Hollander are other cast members. Murphy, who played Lizzie in the 2018 film, previously worked with Chloë Sevigny on the Monsters series as Kitty Menendez. Although it's unclear if she will be able to reprise her role as Borden, her familiarity with the character and Murphy's artistic approach make her a name to keep an eye on as casting moves forward.
Season 4 would be the most backward the Monster series has ever gone if Lizzie Borden is the main emphasis. The choice to focus on a 19th-century case marks a change in the series' narrative direction, taking it farther into the past and away from current American criminal stories.

Such a shift offers both opportunities and challenges. With limited contemporary evidence and a highly debated verdict, the Borden case invites a broader range of interpretations, potentially giving Murphy and his team creative freedom to explore lesser-known aspects of the story.

Conflicting testimony and a lack of forensic diligence in the investigation itself have been blamed for more than a century of conjecture and conspiracy theories. While some contend that Borden's acquittal was an injustice, others maintain that she was falsely accused.
Scholars of gender and class in American society, as well as fans of true crime, continue to find the narrative fascinating. It is a particularly appropriate topic for Murphy's dramatized anthology because of its ongoing relevance in literature, television, and travel.
