Hunnam based this voice on a real tape of Gein, which was never released because police didn't read his rights.
In real life, Gein's mother was domineering and preached against women, calling them evil. His father was an alcoholic who beat the family. After his father died in 1940 and Henry in 1944, Ed lived alone with Augusta until she died in 1945. He was devastated and kept her room exactly as it was. The Question of Who the Real Monster Is
In Monster: The Ed Gein Story, the big idea is that monsters might not just be bad people; they could be created by hard lives and bad influences. Ryan Murphy says the show asks if killers like Gein are born evil or shaped by what happens to them. For Gein, it's a mix of both. He grew up in a strict home with a mean mother who controlled everything.

Ed Gein's Relationship with His Mother
Ed Gein's bond with his mother, Augusta, is at the heart of the series. Played by Laurie Metcalf, Augusta is strict and religious, hating anything sinful. She raises Ed and his brother Henry on a farm, keeping them away from the world. In the show, Ed accidentally kills Henry during a fight and hides it with a fire. This breaks Augusta's heart, and she blames Ed, making their relationship even worse.

How Media Influenced Gein and Vice Versa
The series connects Gein's crimes to famous movies, showing how media shapes killers and how killers shape media. Alfred Hitchcock, played by Tom Hollander, appears as he makes Psycho, inspired by Gein. The film is based on a book that used Gein's story, killing women who remind him of his mother, like Mary Hogan in the show. Hitchcock's marketing, like not letting people in late, is recreated. Murphy says Gein influenced many films: Psycho, The Silence of the Lambs, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and more. The show includes scenes from these, like Tobe Hooper creating Leatherface from Gein's skin masks, and Buffalo Bill dancing in The Silence of the Lambs. In real life, Gein's arrest in 1957 revealed horrors like human skin furniture and masks.

Gein's crimes start small but get worse in the series. After his mother's death, he robs graves for body parts, making belts, masks, and even a suit from skin. He kills Mary Hogan, a bartender who looks like his mom. Then Evelyn, the babysitter, replaces him. Finally, Bernice, a shopkeeper he dates.
