Challenges for LGBTQ+ Actors in Hollywood
While Bailey's success is exciting, it highlights ongoing issues for LGBTQ+ actors. The film industry has improved, but barriers remain. Many queer stars feel they must fit certain molds to get big roles. Bailey is the first out gay actor to top box office charts, which says a lot about past limits. Actors like Ben Whishaw have spoken out. He thinks gay stars need to appeal to straight audiences to reach the top. This means playing "sexy" in a way that fits traditional ideas. Whishaw's words point to why few huge gay stars exist in Hollywood. It's not just talent; it's about perceptions. John Partridge, from EastEnders, agrees but notes limits. He says Bailey is successful, but not at the level of stars like Tom Cruise. In Wicked, Bailey isn't the main lead; he's supporting. Partridge believes queer actors can be "best friends" but not always the hero.
