Many lost their lives, including his father. But Williams fought to survive and refused to let his injuries stop him. He went on to win big in sports and serve his country in war. His journey reminds people that even after great loss, people can achieve amazing things.
From a young age, Richard showed a talent. His father taught him the game, and they practiced together often. By the time he was 12, Richard had won a junior tennis championship in Switzerland. This early success sparked his love for the sport. He played with grace and power, using smooth shots that impressed everyone.
His family supported his dreams, and they planned for him to study at Harvard University in the United States while competing in tennis tournaments. Life in Geneva was comfortable for the Williams family. They lived in a nice home, and Richard enjoyed the beautiful Swiss landscapes.
But his parents wanted him to experience more of the world. In 1912, at age 21, Richard and his father decided to travel to America. They booked tickets on the RMS Titanic, a brand-new luxury ship. Little did they know, this trip would change their lives forever.

During the voyage, Richard and Charles spent time exploring the decks. They talked about Richard's future at Harvard and his tennis plans. The ship was full of wealthy people, and the atmosphere was exciting. But on the night of April 14, the Titanic hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean.
The crash happened around 11:40 p.m., and water started flooding the lower decks. At first, many passengers didn't realize how serious it was. Richard and his father left their cabin on C-Deck when they heard the noise. They saw chaos starting to build.
Crew members began loading women and children into lifeboats first. The two men stayed calm and helped others. Richard even broke down a stuck door with his shoulder to free a trapped passenger. A steward warned him about damaging property, but Richard didn't care. He just wanted to save lives.
Richard and his father jumped into the icy water. The temperature was below freezing, and it shocked their bodies. Charles was hit by a falling funnel from the ship and died instantly. Richard swam hard, dodging debris. He saw a dog swimming nearby, a prize bulldog from another passenger.
In the boat, they stood in knee-deep water for hours. The cold was unbearable, and many people died from it. Out of around 30 who made it to the boat, only about 11 or 13 survived until rescue. Richard distracted himself by talking to a man in a dented hat, trying to fix it in different languages.
Back in New York, Richard dealt with the loss of his father. News reports mixed up stories about him, even saying his body was found later. But Richard cleared it up in letters to friends. He threw himself into recovery and school. Just a few months later, he was back on the tennis court, proving doctors wrong.

Richard Norris Williams II came into the world on January 29, 1891, in Geneva, Switzerland. His parents were American, and his father, Charles Duane Williams, was a successful lawyer. The family had deep roots in American history. Richard was even a descendant of Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.

The Journey on the Titanic
The Titanic was called the "unsinkable" ship. It set sail from Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912, heading to New York City. Richard and his father boarded in Cherbourg, France, as first-class passengers. They had a fancy cabin and enjoyed the ship's many features, like fine dining and a gymnasium. On April 14, they even dined with the ship's captain, Edward Smith. Everything seemed perfect.

The Sinking and Survival
As the ship tilted more, it became clear that the Titanic was going down. Richard and Charles moved to the upper decks. They gave their life jackets to others who needed them. The cold air bit through their clothes as they watched lifeboats row away into the dark. Around 2 a.m. on April 15, the ship broke apart. People screamed as the lights flickered out.
Richard and his father jumped into the icy water. The temperature was below freezing, and it shocked their bodies. Charles was hit by a falling funnel from the ship and died instantly. Richard swam hard, dodging debris. He saw a dog swimming nearby, a prize bulldog from another passenger.

Recovery from Injuries
On the Carpathia, Richard was in bad shape. His legs were numb from frostbite and hypothermia. A doctor looked at them and said they might need to be amputated to prevent gangrene. At just 21, Richard refused. He told the doctor, "I'm going to need these legs." He knew losing them would end his tennis dreams. Instead of giving up, Richard started exercising right away. He walked the decks every two hours, even through the night. The pain felt like thousands of needles stabbing his legs, but he kept going. Day by day, feelings came back. It took weeks, but his determination paid off. His legs recovered enough for him to walk and play sports again, though they hurt for the rest of his life.

Tennis Career Beginnings
Even after the disaster, Richard didn't quit tennis. In 1912, the same year as the Titanic, he won the U.S. National Championships in mixed doubles with his partner Mary Browne. This was a big deal and showed he could still compete at a high level. He entered Harvard University as planned and won college titles there, too.
