Believe it or not, we’re not quick to wear veils during a pandemic! The flu pandemic of 1918-1919, or ‘Spanish influenza,’ which killed north of 50 million individuals, incorporated a few markers of our ongoing pandemic – including stores and schools shutting, cover commands, quarantine, and the inevitable rollout of vaccinations. Covers were made compulsory when Spanish influenza showed up in California, and refusal to wear a veil could bring about a fine or prison time.
