Hilariously Awkward First Dates You Won’t Believe Actually Happened
First dates are always an adventure — sometimes magical, sometimes awkward, and often downright hilarious. While everyone hopes for a rom-com-worthy beginning to their love story, real-life dates have a way of veering into unexpected and cringeworthy territory. From bizarre confessions to awkward goodbyes, these stories showcase the most absurd and laugh-out-loud moments people have experienced on their first dates.
Elbow Kiss Turned Love Story
"I went out with my now-wife of twenty-one years on a first date, went to kiss her goodnight, and elbowed her right in the face. She still took my calls after that."
Love doesn’t just hurt—it sometimes leaves bruises. Imagine the first kiss attempt turning into a boxing match, yet it somehow becomes the foundation of a decades-long marriage. If there’s a lesson here, it’s that true love forgives… even black eyes.
Dinner with Mom and Dad
When you’re trying to make an impression on your date but your mom steals the spotlight—and the leftovers. Nothing screams "mama’s boy" louder than bringing your parents along for moral support and mid-meal food confiscation. Romantic? Not quite. Memorable? Absolutely.
When adulting don't quite hit the mark, and your mom still decides what’s age-appropriate. Imagine planning a fun night out only for it to end with “Mom says no.” Looks like their relationship was rated PG before it even started.
Funeral Pit Stop
Nothing screams romance like a third party in the back seat—especially one who’s a little too quiet. This guy clearly believed in multitasking, but stopping by the morgue mid-date might not have been the “office tour” she expected.
Waiter Knows Too Much
"The waiter came over, looked confused, turned to my date, and asked, 'When did you stop being gay? We had a date last night.'"
When your love life becomes a sitcom. Nothing sets the tone quite like finding out your date might’ve had multiple orientations and romantic interests just 24 hours earlier. The waiter deserves an award for spilling tea hotter than the restaurant’s coffee.
Smell Check Gone Wrong
"On a first date, the guy asked me to smell his food because he thought it might be bad, then pushed my face in it. One and done."
When your date makes you a food critic against your will. Nothing says “I care about your opinion” like a face-first introduction to questionable cuisine. It’s safe to say she left with memories—and probably a lingering smell.
What Even Is Privacy?
"He put his phone down on the table, and it was covered in tape. When I asked why his phone was taped up, he said, 'Because the government is always listening.'"
Some dates open the door to love; others open the door to conspiracy theories. While she might’ve been hoping to learn about his hobbies or interests, he instead gave her a crash course in government surveillance paranoia. Romantic? Not quite.
Grandma, Is That You?
"I met a girl a little younger than me. She told me to meet her at her grandma’s house for the date. I got there, and the girl wasn’t there—she set me up with her grandma."
Who needs Tinder when Grandma is single and ready to mingle? Imagine showing up for a fun date, only to find yourself sipping tea with a retiree. Looks like someone took “age doesn’t matter” a little too literally
Too Many Toms
"I once showed up to a date, and 10 of her friends were there. She had no idea I was coming because she was blackout drunk and introduced me as 'Tom.' When I corrected her, she said, 'Oh yeah, Tom is tomorrow night.'"
When you’re not even the star of your own date. Being mistaken for someone else might sting, but finding out you’re part of a scheduling conflict is the real kicker. Tom might’ve dodged a bullet… but so did he.
"As we were saying goodbye, she thanked me for taking her to the movies. I said something like, 'Yeah, I didn’t have anything else to do.' Next month will be our third wedding anniversary."
What starts as a lack of enthusiasm can apparently bloom into wedded bliss. Maybe it wasn’t the best pickup line, but hey—it clearly worked. Proof that sometimes, it’s not about what you say, but what happens next.
"I once saw a guy shake his date's hand when she reached for some bread."
Bread etiquette just reached corporate levels of awkwardness! Instead of a casual dinner interaction, this moment turned into what looked like a formal business transaction. Imagine the confusion as she went for the bread roll, only to be met with a firm handshake. Maybe he thought he was networking his way to her heart. Who needs romance when you can seal the deal with a handshake?
The Goodbye Fart
"Accidentally farted during a goodbye hug, and she ghosted me afterward."
Goodbyes can be memorable, but this one was unforgettable in the most awkward way possible. What started as a heartfelt hug quickly became an air-felt disaster. It was a goodbye that lingered in more ways than one, and her ghosting might have been her only escape from the haunting memory. Let this be a lesson — sometimes, it’s better to skip the hug.
The Moaning Drinker
"The guy would moan every time after sipping his drink. I kept thinking I was being pranked. Turns out he just moans."
Imagine sitting across from someone who treats every sip of water like a five-star gourmet experience — complete with audible appreciation. The entire night must have felt like an elaborate hidden-camera prank. Just when she thought Ashton Kutcher might jump out, she realized this was no joke. Turns out, he wasn’t reviewing the drink; he just had a very... unique habit.
Salad with a Side of Faith
"The girl ordered Caesar salad and ate it with her hands, saying she’s 'not big on utensils.' Then she asked if I’d accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior."
This date took a turn that no one could have predicted. Eating salad with your hands might be unconventional, but diving into religion during the main course? That’s next-level bold. Forget casual conversation; this dinner came with a side of faith and a full-on confession invitation. Who knew Caesar salad could spark such divine intervention?
Lost in Tinder Translation
"I got us lost on a Tinder date. Jokingly asked what his worst first date was, and he said, 'Probably this one.' There wasn’t a second date."
Getting lost on a first date is one thing, but turning it into a self-fulfilling prophecy is another. When she asked about his worst date experience, she probably wasn’t expecting to be nominated on the spot. Honesty may be the best policy, but in this case, it ensured there wouldn’t be a sequel to this wandering adventure.
Separated Cinema Experience
"We couldn’t get two tickets together, so we sat on opposite sides of the theater. Afterward, we just said 'cool, bye.'"
This date redefined “long-distance relationships.” Sharing a movie experience from opposite sides of the theater is one thing, but the lackluster goodbye afterward sealed the deal. Maybe the movie was more engaging than the company. At least they can say they survived their first — and probably last — socially distant date.
Parallel Parking Disaster
"My date let me wait on the curb while she tried to parallel park. After three failed attempts, she drove off. I walked home."
Few things are as humbling as parallel parking in front of someone you’re trying to impress. After three failed attempts, this date took an unexpected turn when she decided to abandon both her car and her date. Left on the curb like a forgotten package, he took the long walk home — probably rethinking his taste in dates and transportation.
The Triple Threat
"I had a tummy ache but tried to kiss her anyway. I farted, puked on her bed, and ran out of her apartment."
This story could be the plot of a chaotic comedy film. It started with an innocent kiss attempt, spiraled into a full-blown fart, and ended with him fleeing the scene after puking on her bed. A trifecta of disaster that no apology could fix. If there were an award for the most eventful date, this one would take the cake — and throw it up.
Dog and Humor Clash
"She asked about my dog. I said, 'He’s a Jack Russell Terrier.' She said, 'I don’t think you’re funny,' so I just ate and left."
Humor can be subjective, but this was a clear mismatch of comedic tastes. While he envisioned a playful compliment to his dog, she couldn’t crack a smile. Left with no choice, he finished his meal solo. At least one of them left satisfied — and it wasn’t her.
Lost in the Sunset
"On a sunset hike, we got lost. Phones were on 1%, and he called his mom for help. Rescue teams walked us down, and we ended up in the local paper."
What started as a romantic sunset hike turned into a headline-worthy misadventure. With phones dying and no clue how to navigate, the date escalated to calling his mom for advice. Thanks to a rescue team, they made it back down the mountain — and into the local news. A hike to remember, though not for the reasons they’d hoped.

Rated R? Call Mom First!
