However, Poitier could not peruse content for a period in his childhood.

Thanks to a Jewish server he worked with, he figured out how to peruse.
At his unassuming position washing dishes, Poitier would carry papers with him during his movements.

His associates interpreted this as meaning that he preferred perusing the news. However the fact of the matter was the inverse.

A collaborator of his, an older Jewish man, asked him what was in the papers. Poitier let him know he was unable to try and understand them.
