These creatures, about the length of a hand, are naturally territorial. In a 2016 experiment, ecologist Kristen Cecala created what she called a “salamander fight club.”

The results were surprising: at this higher temperature, the salamanders were nearly four times more likely to lunge, bite, or chase each other compared to cooler conditions at 15°C or 20°C.

Fish are another group affected by rising temperatures. In a 2024 study, freshwater biologist Erin Francispillai studied bluntnose minnows, small fish that swim together in groups called shoals. She set up tanks where the temperature swung from 18°C to 24°C in a single day, mimicking what happens in streams that lose tree cover due to deforestation.
