The term “dandy,” originally meaning a man overly focused on fashion, became linked to Black men in 18th-century Europe as well-dressed servant staff became a trend. Over time, this label has been reclaimed to showcase the development of the Black style, which continues to influence and be copied. According to the Met, dandyism allowed Black individuals to use clothing, gestures, humor, and cleverness to reshape their identities and explore new political and social possibilities.
