Sheldon Holland had that sort of bond with his canine Django.
The pair started their kinship when they were allowed to Afghanistan in 2011. Sheldon was a previous U.S. American K9 Location Administrations Explosives controller, and Django was his mate around then. They were together for quite some time.
After their task in Afghanistan, Sheldon needed to return home to Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The tragic news was he was unable to take Django with him. He guaranteed he would return and bring him back home.
