This is known as one of medicine’s most incredible moments. In 1922, at the University of Toronto, scientists went to a hospital ward with children who were comatose and dying from diabetic ketoacidosis. Imagine a room full of parents sitting at the bedside waiting for the inevitable death of their child. The scientists went from bed to bed and injected the children with the new purified extract – insulin. As they began to inject the last comatose child, the first child injected began to awaken. In the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, a man named Hideaki Akaiwa rushed home from work to find his neighborhood under ten feet of water. Instead of waiting for the search and rescue team, he donned a wetsuit and swam 200 meters, wading his way through underwater hazards and debris to reach his house. He found his wife brought her to safety, and went back in to find his mother. He continued to search for survivors by himself in the following days.

In 2010, 7-year-old Stella Berndtsson drowned in icy water on Dec 23. Her body was found after 32 hours by a rescue helicopter and was taken to hospital. Her body temperature was 13°C/55.4°F. Despite this, the doctors succeeded in saving Stella by warming her slowly. Stella made a remarkable recovery.
