As a WWII veteran, Hubert began to grieve for his beloved wife June, as it became clear that she would not make it through the new year.
June had suffered multiple strokes in the years leading up to her 100th birthday, but her health worsened that summer as she developed a heart condition and a urinary tract infection. These complications made it difficult for her to recover. Hubert was in good health and found the idea of losing his wife too difficult to bear. His daughter believes that he died of a broken heart, unable to imagine life without his beloved partner.
